Traps, bonus objectives and Apple M1 support
I think it's a lot of fun to be able to sabotage a trap laid out by the enemy guards. Sabotaging it and having the guards fall into their own traps. So now it's part of the game, yay! ^^
This was a tricky feature. At first I would just sabotage all traps and completely clear levels of all the guards. Funny, but very much overpowered. Fortunately, I got great suggestions on my Twitch stream to make traps more balanced.
Once a sabotaged trap closes after capturing one or more guards, it resets itself. So the player has to sabotage the trap again. Also, the trap remains dangerous to the player, even after the sabotage. Now it feels more balanced and less overpowered. It has a risk factor.
I also changed the objective of the 3rd mission to sabotage a trap and to trap the target guard. So now each mission has a unique objective! Woohoo, more gameplay variety! ^^
The bonus objectives have been implemented. For now these are just personal challenges. In the next update I might introduce Thief Ranks and have the bonus objectives count toward achieving the next Thief Rank.
The first version of this game had a lot of hiding places. That made the game too easy, so I removed most hiding places. Now, with the bonus objective "No hiding", I feel comfortable to re-introduce some of these hiding places. Now the player is able to hide under tables, in barrels and in closets.
Some other new features are fullscreen / window mode support and the Apple M1 support. Supporting macOS is new for me, so I hope I got it right on this first build for Mac.
Now onto the next release. I mentioned a sandbox-style city in my last blog post. After some play-testing, this turned out to be a bad idea. It just reduces the action and tension of the game. So instead, I will work on a new Prison Escape intro level and Thief Ranks. Just these two features, so I will be able to update soon again. I'm excited to work on this next version of the game! ^^
